This is about rock piles and stone mound sites in New England. A balance is needed between keeping them secret and making them public. Also arrowheads, stone tools and other surface archaeology.

Piles in the Mist - previews of more piles from the hills west of Leominster
I took some pictures I am pleased with today. I'll describe the whole place in more detail later. For now, here are some nice photos that capture the mood of a rainy day.
Very Interesting Site, I googled new england rock piles after coming across a few interesting ones in the acton and concord preservation lands. Though its hard to determine if these were the works of natives or later settlers. Who knows?
I would be interested to know where you found rock piles in Acton and, more so, in Concord. If you found rock piles in Concord outside of Estrabrook Woods I would definately like to know: where?
Well maybe 30'x40'. Not quite the biggest I have seen but definately getting up there. Frankly I think that one particular culture built piles like that and they are not the same as the people who were here when the European's arrived who, I believe, made much smaller piles.

ReplyDeleteThat first picture reminds me of the very largest of piles I've found that I sent you some terrible photos of.
ReplyDeleteHow large is that pile?
