What kind of mushrooms are these?

[Not rock pile related]A bit like the French delicacy. This is the second time I saw this kind recently. My Father taught us about the more common mushrooms but I never saw this kind before.

Update: they are called Black Trumpets

  2. I found some on a subsequent hike, brought them home, fried them in butter and they turned into what looked like and tasted like little bits of black rubber. Yuck. Maybe it depends on what they were growing in. These were growing under white pines.
