More from Chris:
...pictures from a site in Chesterfield NH. There are a lot of stone piles and walls at this site. I wonder what you think of these pictures? Farm clearing piles? I don't know. Here is the link:

Some of those features are probably American Indian, such as the stone piles on boulders and the quartz accents. One expects to find Indian stonework throughout the New England area, so nothing like this is surprising to me. The area should be explored more carefully.
ReplyDeleteThanks for the input on this, I appreciate it. There are a huge number of stone walls at this site and I am certain that at least some of the walls are remnants of postcolonial farming. The stone heap in one of the photos looks like what I would expect a farm clearing pile to look like. I do agree that the stone piles on boulders appear to be ceremonial. I spent an entire afternoon at this site and took a lot of photos, I am sure there is much more to find there as well. Besides being an interesting place, the landscape is very beautiful there. There is a lovely pond at the bottom of the hill.
ReplyDeleteOne interesting feature of note is the small pile of stones beneath the overhang of the large boulder. I have seen quite a bit of that at sites in Southern New England.
