Attached is a photo of a cairn from Woodstock, NY, showing a piece of quartzite on top. Your VA respondant asked whether there was quartz on the cairns I posted images of.
This is about rock piles and stone mound sites in New England. A balance is needed between keeping them secret and making them public. Also arrowheads, stone tools and other surface archaeology.

ReplyDeleteGosh, all those colonial farmers taking time to carefully build agriculturally useless piles of rocks for aesthetic purposes and place single pieces of white quartz in each one of them for some apparent aesthetic reason. And colonial farmers did this from Western Pennsylvania to the Atlantic, and from Georgia to Maine.
