Update: here is something similar, also from Billerica. Note the two holes drilled in the large flat rock to the right of the opening.
This is about rock piles and stone mound sites in New England. A balance is needed between keeping them secret and making them public. Also arrowheads, stone tools and other surface archaeology.
I just saw another of these on the drive to work. I wonder if the large flat stone to the right could be rolled into place to block the opening?

ReplyDeleteLooking more at the shape of that flat rock it is perfect for being rolled into the entrance: note the rounded left edge and then the two straight parts as you continue clockwise around the stone. The first straight part would rest on the ground, the second one would line up with the left edge of the opening. This must be for sheepherding - cuz we all know about shepherds and rocks rolled in front of openings.
