This is about rock piles and stone mound sites in New England. A balance is needed between keeping them secret and making them public. Also arrowheads, stone tools and other surface archaeology.
I don't know that that might be a "U". Someone could have made a fire in it but it is very well made and not consistent with a camping effort.
Did you read the part where Stiles talks about a stone "sepulcher" where they found a 6.5 foot skeleton? They were tearing the rocks apart for re-use when they found the remains.
