I found myself being stupid and trying to interpret some rock piles independently from some nearby boulders they were clearly related to. So perhaps only I need this advice but: sometimes it seems like rock piles are being constructed where no larger rock is available, constructed there to play a role that might just as well be played by another rock. So do not ignore the rocks nearby.I know this is a lousy picture but the rocks are lined up with the corner rock pile.
This was coming down off the top of Marble Hill in Stow.
For further study, I have no problem with freely interpreting these sites. I would never quash such a thing.
ReplyDeleteBut when constructing a case for these sites being Indian in origin, the ethnography demonstrates that the historic Indians likely believed a spirit was released when a boulder or bedrock became split. They also likely believed the split to be the dwelling place of such a spirit. They probably propitiated the spirit at this site with modest offerings that may have included wood, stone, bone, food, or tobacco.
Until more information is found, the rest is left to speculation and guesswork.
