Clarifying that Comment

  2. It would be interesting to know what their sources were. I suspect that in southern New England, at least, the clearing of land was more extensive inland than is shown. And I have some serious doubts about the degree of land clearance along the coast in the Maritimes!

    Meanwhile, here's another clue for you all: based on GIS data, 25.1% of the 4489 sites for which I have this information (currently lacking for Delaware, Maryland, and the Maritimes) are within 1 km of a fault line. Distance to fault line falls off beyond this, as follows:

    1 - 2 km: 17.2%
    2 - 3 km: 10.8%
    3 - 4 km: 7.4%
    4 - 5 km: 6.0%

    Only 16.8% are more than 10 km from a fault line.
