To keep off the dull times lately, I've been looking at paintings that might include zigzag stone fences in the stage of being formed gradually and haphazardly as field clearing stones are "thrown up" against wooden rail fences, just like it says in all those stone wall books, from Eric Sloane in the middle of the last century to Professor Robert Thorson in the begining of the present century.

Am I interpreting Tim's comment correctly, that if "throwing stones up against the fence" was practiced then how come the practice never shows up in these pictures?
Well, I thought about all the official documents we read about zigzag stone walls and then wondered if artists would be a more honest source and back up the "thrown up" theory - after a 21 year search for a single zigzag stone wall that isn't a careful construction...
