"Archaeologists have a good idea of the diagnostic characteristics of stone piles and stone walls related to farming. We now need to get a handle on the distinctive traits of indigenous sacred rock sites. This may prove difficult because "sacred" is sometimes equated with "secret." Also, the presence of quartz cobbles in a stone pile is often cited as evidence that the pile is of indigenous origin..." L. Lavin (296)
