Take a look at the aerial photos. The walls sometimes follow ridgelines and are not straight. If we assume these are Native American and not astronomical (since they are not straight) then one possibility is suggested by Danny S. mentioning that sometimes the walls terminate at large rocks. This is reminiscent of the "connecting" function mentioned by Norman Muller a while ago.
