The "small chambers" too small for a person fit into are more correctly termed "niches". One potential interpretation of these features, is they are places where perishable offerings (i.e. tobbacco, food, feathers, etc) were made to a spirit. Yes I agree that really small enclosures could be niches for offerings. But there is apparently a gradation of sizes from the smalles to larger ones. Did I mention these?
