It is sad and strange that none of these materials are on display at the Smithsonian. I looked in vain (veign? vane?) for any sign of an arrowhead, when I visited those museums in Washington.

I assume you went to the Museum of the American Indian, or whatever it is called. There they have pull-out drawers with projectile points of various kinds. You'll find nothing of the kind at the other Smithsonian museums.

It was before that museum was opened. Sounds like it might be worth another trip to DC
