I think of the Fort Ancient site as one of the 'missing links' between the earthworks of the mound builders and the
stoneworks of the east. Some descriptions you read of it say that the walls at Fort Ancient are of earth and stone. There was a large stone mound at the Newark earthworks, too, when colonists first got there, but it was taken apart for building materials.
